ROGIER MAASKANTPHOTOGRAPHY/CONCEPT/
Insects play a vital role in our ecosystem, yet their significance often goes unnoticed. How often do they escape our attention, especially the nocturnal ones? In today’s world, where visibility is often equated with value, it is easy to overlook these inconspicuous creatures. Yet, for many species, this very quality is essential to their survival. As well as for our survival.&#38;nbsp;
These images offer a rare glimpse into a hidden world—one that coexists with ours yet remains largely unseen. They reveal a delicate balance of beauty and unpredictability, showcasing nature’s quiet grandeur just above our heads. It is a world that is both modest and spectacular, familiar yet magical, ordinary yet extraordinary.
All the photographs in the book Sense of presence were taken in and around Rotterdam, the city where I live. Hopefully they will reach a wider audience, offering a fresh perspective on our surroundings, inspiring a deeper connection with nature, and, above all, reminding us of the joy and wonder it has to offer.

The Photo Book Festival will be held at the Rietveld Pavilion in Amersfoort from November 27th to 30th.

I'll be there on Thursday, August 27th, and Sunday, August 30th.

Vrijdag 5 juli is in Museum Het Natuurhistorisch het boek gepresenteerd.Rob de Vos, collectiebeheerder Lepidoptera bij Naturalis, nam het eerste exemplaar in ontvangst.

From 1 to 5 July 2024, the 18th  International Symposium on Trichoptera (Moths) took place in Quito, Ecuador.
I made a short film and a poster that puts the Moth in the spotlight.
In collaboration with Ralph W. Holzenthal, Professor Emeritus, Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota, Jolanda Huisman and Blanca Ríos.
Van 1 t/m 5 juli vond in Quito, Ecuador, het 18e Internationale Symposium over Trichoptera (Schietmotten) plaats.
Ik maakte daarvoor een korte film en een poster die de Schietmotten in de schijnwerpers zet.

Insecten zoals je ze nog niet eerder zag. De afgelopen 350 miljoen jaar 


De camera hanteer ik al best lang. Begonnen met zogenoemde 'straatfotografie' is mijn fotografische werk langzaamaan verschoven naar portretten. Nu ben ik weer terug bij een heel snel onderwerp: vliegende insecten. Deze bijzondere dieren verdienen, vind ik, een podium: een boek. Omdat ze magisch zijn. En van vitaal belang voor ons als mens. Dus: belangrijk. Toch zijn ze niet eerder in al hun gratie op deze manier vastgelegd of te zien geweest. Gedurende hun geschatte 350 miljoen jarige bestaan.. 
Ik heb het zien van deze insecten voor u makkelijk gemaakt. Wat aaibaarheid betreft zijn ze dan misschien niet vergelijkbaar met al die schattige pandabeertjes, olifantjes en baby miereneters maar ze hebben één sterke troef in handen: ze zijn magisch.
De beelden zijn tot stand gekomen in de schemering en in het donker, in en rond Rotterdam, de stad waar ik woon. De collectie is inmiddels fors gegroeid. Deze foto's maken en zien was en is mij een enorm genoegen. De natuur als stylist, set dresser en art-director ineen. De aarde is de MEGAdeal. Zo blijkt maar weer.
Met hulp van 117 donaties en bijdragen van de gemeente Rotterdam en het Cultuurfonds wordt dit fotoboek gerealiseerd. Een klik op de foto hieronder brengt u naar hoe de crowdfundingcampagne op de website van VoordeKunst stond. Daar vindt u ook meer informatie over deze foto’s.

From 1 to 5 July 2024, the 18th International Symposium on Trichoptera (Moths) took place in Quito, Ecuador.I made a short film and a poster that puts the Moth in the spotlight.In collaboration with Ralph W. Holzenthal, Professor Emeritus, Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota, Jolanda Huisman and Blanca Ríos.

	sense of presence &#38;nbsp;summer 2021 - ongoingInsects play a vital role in our ecosystem, yet their significance often goes unnoticed. How often do they escape our attention—especially the nocturnal ones? In today’s world, where visibility is often equated with value, it is easy to overlook these inconspicuous creatures. Yet, for many species, this very quality is essential to their survival.

These images offer a rare glimpse into a hidden world—one that coexists with ours yet remains largely unseen. They reveal a delicate balance of beauty and unpredictability, showcasing nature’s quiet grandeur just above our heads. It is a world that is both modest and spectacular, familiar yet magical, ordinary yet extraordinary.

Most of these photographs were taken in and around Rotterdam, where I live. My hope is that they will reach a wider audience, offering a fresh perspective on our surroundings, inspiring a deeper connection with nature, and, above all, reminding us of the joy and wonder it has to offer.
